Chapter 1: This chapter introduces Will and his ward mates; Horace, Jenny, George, and Alyss. The next day is choosing day, a day where they will be choosing their future careers.
Chapter 2: In this chapter, it is choosing day and all the craftmaster are awaiting what they will choose. In the corner of his eye, he sees Halt, the Ranger. Horace is accepted into battle school.
Chapter 3: Alyss is accepted into Diplomatic service. George is accepted into scribe school. Jenny gets accented into cooking school.
Chapter 4: Will applies for battle school and horse school, but his size is too small. Will tells everyone about his skills, climbing and sneaking around. Halt speaks up, writing down something on a piece of paper, later handing it to Baron, the speaker. Baron says that he will sleep on it.
Chapter 5: Will wants to know what was on the paper, so he climbs the tower and gets caught by Halt. He thinks he will be punished but Halts lets him read it and is accepted into the Rangers. He has mixed emotions.
Chapter 6: Will thinks the Rangers are black magicians. He’s scared of them. He ells Baron of his feelings of becoming a Ranger’s apprentice.
Chapter 7: Will leaves castle Redmount, where he lives, to go to Halt’s home in the woods. Halt makes him clean up and clean his cabin.
Chapter 8: Halts explains to Will what a Ranger really is, its history, and what skills he brings forward for a Ranger.
Chapter 9: In this chapter, Horace, Will’s best friend, gets bullied by 3 older kids in his battle school.
Chapter 10: Halt teaches will about the weapons the Rangers use. He shows him a bow and 2 knives.
Chapter 11: Horace is training in battle school but for some reason he always adds an extra swing. Sir Karel notices this and gives him a lecture.
Chapter 12: In this chapter, Will goes to a farm and meets ‘Old Bob”. This is where he gets his Ranger’s horse, Tug. He is really scared because he has never ridden a horse and doesn’t want to be embarrassed.
Chapter 13: Sir Rodney and Sir Karel talk about Horace’s extra swing. They decide that he is a natural and will be moving up in the next year. Once again Horace gets bullied.
Chapter 14: Will rides Tug and really enjoys it. He says that he is as fast as the wind but Halt is not too excited
Chapter 15: In this chapter, Will goes to the Harvest day festival back in Castle Redmont. Will asks about which Ranger defeated the evil lord, Morgarath but who didn’t die. Baron tells him that the ranger was Halt.
Chapter 16: The group meet at harvest day and Jenny has cooked her amazing pies. Horace is late so the group starts. Horace and Will start a fist fight. Sir Rodney breaks them up.
Chapter 17: Halt and Will ride home in the snow and they see giant boar tracks. Suddenly a farmer emerges from the bushes.
Chapter 18: The farmer tells Halt of the wild boar. Halt tells the farmer to go back to the castle to tell Baron and Rodney to bring their troops.
Chapter 19: Halt and Will track down the boar with ease. They find it in a bush. Rodney and Baron surrounds the bush and kill the boar.
Chapter 20: In this chapter, a second boar emerges from another bush unexpectedly. It runs towards Horace, Horace slips and drops his spear. Will causes a distraction, saves Horace, the boar leaves Horace. Halt fires his longbow and kills the boar.
Chapter 21: Will is more respected by the people. The bullies bully Horace and go after Will
Chapter 22: In this chapter, the bullies come to Will, but Horace saves him after a few hits. Halt comes and tells them to face Horace one on one. Horace beats them easily.
Chapter 23: In this chapter, The bullies are expelled from battle school. Halt and Will Meet the other Rangers and play a game where they try to scare each other. This time it is Will and Halt vs. Gilan, Halts old apprentice. Halt and Will win.
Chapter 24: Halt explains how Morgarath is getting ready for war and explains the Kalkara, a monster, and 2 of them are on the loose. Halt, Will and Gilan go after them.
Chapter 25: In this chapter, the group go off to the Solitary plains where they will find the Kalkara. They hear the irritating noise of the stone flutes.
Chapter 26: Halt and Will talk about the war and hear the howl of the Kalkara.
Chapter 27: The group find the Kalkara but cannot kill it themselves as they are too strong. Will goes back to get reinforcements .
Chapter 28: Will rides back to Castle Redmont and tell Baron and Sir Rodney. They get their reinforcements.
Chapter 29: In this chapter, They reach the Kalkara to see that Halt had killed one already but the second one is fast approaching. They also don’t know where Halt is.
Chapter 30: Halt is bleeding and really begging that the reinforcements come. They do and Baron and Rodney go after it with their swords and Battle axes. They are about to be killed but Will fires his flaming arrow and kills it.
Chapter 31: The group is parting at the Inn at Wensley village. Will dances with Alyss and they kiss.
Chapter 32: Will is acknowledged at a large ceremony with Rodney and Baron. He is asked if he wants to be a student at battle school but he refuses saying
he is a ranger.
